Current Projects and Clients Spring 2011
Tenant Empowerment Programme
SNU is a Lead Adviser under the Tenant Services Authority's Tenant Empowerment Programme (TEP). Under the TEP, SNU is currently working on the following projects:
Customs House and Canning Town Residents, Newham (2010 to date)
SNU has been appointed Lead Adviser to this residents' group seeking to manage 1,000 dwellings in an area of Newham in urgent need of regeneration and more effective local management.
SARAG, Ealing (2007 to date)
SNU is Lead Adviser to South Acton Residents Advisory Group (SARAG) which is developing a tenant management organisation on the 2,000 dwelling South Acton Estate in Ealing. SNU has also undertaken community safety and environmental initiatives for SARAG.
PACCA TMO, Lambeth (2009 to date)
Established TMOs attract interest from neighbouring estates where residents may be interested in enjoying the improved services often associated with TMOs. This is the case with the established Patmos Area Community Conservation Association (PACCA) TMO in Lambeth. SNU is consulting residents on adjacent estates who are considering whether to join with the PACCA TMO.
Other work with Tenant Management Organisations
Besides acting as Lead Adviser to residents' groups seeking to set up or to join in with TMOs, SNU also provides consultancy services to established TMOs.
Friday Hill TMO, Waltham Forest (2006 to date)
SNU is supporting Friday Hill TMO, with whom it has worked since 1996, in the development of a Tenant Led Stock Transfer. This process would see Friday Hill TMO raise the finance to purchase the housing stock and vest in a newly formed locally accountable housing association. The new association will remain committed to principles of resident involvement and stewardship but will have greater independence and flexibility to invest in the housing stock and in local community development. SNU is providing financial modeling, negotiating and tenant consultation support.
Arden TMO, Hackney (2009 to date)
SNU is working with the Board of Arden TMO to develop a business plan setting out a new staffing structure and other improvements to the way in which this well established TMO delivers its services. Business plan development is being combined with training and other support for the Board
SNU is also assisting Arden with management, monitoring, new functions, personnel policies and environment strategy.
Suffolk TMO, Hackney (2009 to date)
SNU is working with the TMO to revise its Management Agreement with the local authority to reflect changing responsibilities and costs.
Environment Projects
WRAP Schools' Recycling Schemes (2007 to date)
SNU is responsible for developing, updating, delivering and marking delegate course assignments for the Waste & Resources Action Programme (WRAP) Schools' Recycling Schemes Training Course. The course, comprising preparatory work, attendance at a two day residential training venue and a post course written assignment, provides support for council recycling officers in improving the performance of recycling schemes in schools. The residential component of the thirteenth course took place in London in February 2011. For more information contact www.wrap.org.uk
Cohousing
SNU is interested in working with residents' groups wanting to set up cohousing schemes. In co housing, members choose to live more communally, acquiring or building dwellings which remain private but which facilitate communal activity. This might include shared gardens, allotments, white goods, communal activities such as meals, and shared care for those with disabilities or health problems.
Green TMOs
SNU is also interested in working to improve the environmental performance of TMOs. TMOs have considerable potential as environmental organisations. Procurement, energy insulation, microgeneration, improved recycling facilities, allotments and local food growing, car sharing etc are all initiatives which TMOs are well placed to involve themselves in with their residents.
SNU will be seeking to develop these initiatives in the coming months.
